- Abstract
- (Meta-)Data included in this layer are available with a CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY 3.0 (<https://creativecommons.org/>) data licence and can be retrieved from PANGAEA - Data Publisher for Earth & Environmental Science - <https://www.pangaea.de/>. This new PANGAEA Bathymetry Web Map Service (first release 2021) is developed as part of the German Marine Research Alliance in the core area "Data management and Digitalization" (Deutsche Allianz Meeresforschung, DAM <https://www.allianz-meeresforschung.de/>). Further user-oriented documentation can be also found here <https://wiki.pangaea.de/wiki/PANGAEA_Bathymetry_Web_Map_Services>.

Published multibeam bathymetry raw data archived at PANGAEA are visualized and footprints (polygon) calculated by using the software package MB-System (Caress, D. W., and D. N. Chayes, MB-System: Mapping the Seafloor, <http://www.mbari.org/products/research-software/mb-system/>, 2021) and gdal (GDAL/OGR contributors (2021). GDAL/OGR Geospatial Data Abstraction software Library. Open Source Geospatial Foundation. URL <https://gdal.org>). The grids as a base for footprint extraction are created by using a Gaussian weighted mean filter during processing. Grid resolution calculation is based in general on average depth for the entire dataset, however may also depend on limited processing capacities. Thus, raster resolution and therefore footprints may not be representing the true coverage of the data. In addition, please note that occasionally in case of very bad data quality some data files of the corresponding dataset may have been left out for grid (footprint) calculation for this layer. To enhance performance of this layer, the polygons are simplified in the database using the PostGIS query ‘ST_SimplifyPreserveTopology’ with a 0.01 degree tolerance.

Each incorporated PANGAEA dataset in this service contains a vast amount of individual dataset-specific metadata. If you consider embedding this service (data layers) into any frontend application (e.g., a web-based data portal), please also make the incorporated metadata of each layer available and visible to the user.

To further reuse the meta(data) visible here, please always check and use the corresponding data publication for further meta(data) info (e.g. dataset abstract, other related references, ancillary data, etc.). All visible data of this service must be cited properly via the given citation and the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) provided in the metadata field “citation”. In addition, please always refer to the PANGAEA Bathymetry Web Map Service (+ address <https://maps.awi.de/services/common/pangaea_bathymetry/wms>) and provide the day of access [e.g.: Damaske, Daniel; Becker, Marius (2021): Multibeam bathymetry raw data (Kongsberg EM 122 entire dataset) of RV MARIA S. MERIAN during cruise MSM97/2. PANGAEA, <https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.927786>, visualized through PANGAEA Bathymetry Web Map Service <https://maps.awi.de/services/common/pangaea_bathymetry/wms>, accessed on 13.12.2021].

Note, that raw data from each publication may differ in quality and may still be under moratorium. Due to new technical developments at PANGAEA not all multibeam bathymetry raw data archived in PANGAEA are visible through this service. The amount of included datasets will be continuously increased. These data shall not be used for navigational purposes. Further information on the usage of data can be found in the PANGAEA Terms of Use <https://pangaea.de/about/terms.php>.

This abstract and service (considered as beta version) is under construction.
